Self Assessment of first draft

This is our first draft of our film opening. As you can see it isn't at the standard that we wanted it to be as we haven't fully finished it, however we only have a few errors to correct.

Things that went well:

In our first draft I feel that the music that we chose was really good as it went well with the sport theme, and also we managed to fade it out when the short changed or when someone was talking so it wasn't too loud when it didn't need to be.  I also feel that the shots that we took were of a really good quality and we made sure that we took the opportunity to film in the good sunny weather and this made our shots look really good so it paid off.

Things that we can improve on:

I think that we should've made sure that our actual titles were in the first draft as this would have made sure that we were more prepared. This links in with managing our time correctly, we should have made sure that we booked specific places to film parts of our film opening because when we first started filming we didn't book for example the dance studio and on the day we had planned to film there we couldn't as it was being used by another class. This would have helped us to ensure that our first draft was almost perfect because we would have had the right amount of shots and we would have had the footage in the locations that we wanted.

Peer feedback:

We received reasonably good feedback from our peers about our first draft. Some said that the shots we took were really good and clear which made our film opening stand out from some of the other groups.
However, some of our peers said that we need to make sure that our titles are all of the same font to ensure that they are at the correct quality that they need to be. We listened to our peers about this and we have now made sure that the titles are all the same font and also we made sure that they came on the screen in equal time periods.

What elements of this sequence did you feel was successful? Give at least two elements and explain why they were successful.

I feel that the

Were there any aspects of the sequence which you felt were confusing? Explain

I feel that at some points in the film opening it gets a bit confusing at which actor is on screen, this could be because me and Sophie were wearing similar clothes which could have got confusing for the audience.

List two things which you feel would have improved this sequence and explain your opinion.

I believe that if we had included a bit more dialogue in our film opening then it would have been a bit more well explained at what the film is based on. It is clear to the viewers that the film is based on sports but it may not be as clear that it is about two girls who dislike each other but compete for the same country.

Evidence of Peer Assessing

These images show how we are helping each other with our film openings. It shows how we peer assess each others films with our teacher too help with what we could make better and improve.

Costume Ideas

Renae and Sophie are the main characters in the film. We are trying to portray the difference in the two girls: Renae is rich and Sophie is poor, an easy way to do this was by showing the difference in their clothing that they wear throughout the film. We decided to create a prezi to show the differences in clothing as it allowed us to show pictures with explanation as well.

Production Company Logo

As a group we decided to use Travis' production logo as we felt it was the best one out of all of ours in the group, and we also felt that it went well with our film.

BBFC Certificate

As a group, we decided that our BBFC certificate will be rating 12. We thought this rating was suitable for our film opening because there is minimal content involved that will offend viewers.

The BBFC makes our film opening a 12 for many reasons:

1. Discriminatory language and behaviours not endorsed by the work as a whole.
2. Drugs are not involved within the instructional detail.
3. There is no promotion or potential dangerous behaviour which children are likely to copy. Also there is no glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons such as knives.
4. There is no moderate language and there is no strong language involved.
5. There is no nudity or sexual content.
6. There is also no violence used or emphasis on injuries or blood. Neither is their any gory moments that need to be justified by the context.
7. There is no moderate physical and physiological threat and horror sequences.

Teacher Feedback

Today we received feedback from our teacher about our film opening. All of the titles have been written up and most of the editing has been completed.
  1. 00:02:16- At this time the cut look insufficient. The lighting goes from yellow to green and the cut seems unnecessary. The cut doesn't need to be there as it isn't cutting out any time.
  2. We shouldn't  have our title towards the beginning of a film. Ours is in an irregular place.
  3. The titles need to be sorted out as the fonts are different and the sizes are irregular. It looks messy and all the shots don't relate.
  4. On the shot where the title 'production designer' comes up, the lighting is too dark compared to the rest of the shots in the scene.
  5. The title which states 'director' needs to be sorted out as there is a capital in the middle of the word.
  6. Add more diegetic sound.
We have taken this feedback on board and have decided too alter a few things within our film opening to make it more efficient and try to achieve the grade which we desire. For the diegetic sound, we are inserting the rest of the sound that has been deleted from the clips. In addition we came up with an idea that we do a voice over at the beginning and copy a script from an old race to try and piece together all of the different events within the opening. Our teacher also suggested that we could add a voice over of a variety of voices that are negative when Sophie appears. She thought this would make the viewers understand more of what is going on however we did not seem to understand this idea or think it would make the film seem more logical.

Codes and Conventions

Main icons used within the film opening:
  • Calendar
  • Track
  • Sport Accessories
  • The Track
  • The swimming pool

Setting:

Our settings are in a few different places throughout. All of our settings are bright and positive, we tried to do this to portray a happy image throughout. However, the settings are slightly different for the two main characters. For example, the setting when Sophie's character is running outside it is quite misty and this portrays a cold image. However, when Renae's character is in the swimming pool training, this is a very bright image and this then shows the difference in the two characters.

Themes:
  • The themes shown throughout our film is the poor vs rich in the two characters.
  • The main theme in the film is sport.

Characters:
  • Renae's character is known as Scarlett and her name is used in the gym scene.
  • Sophie's character is known as Ruth, however her name is not mentioned throughout the film, this is to show that she isn't as important as Renae's character.
The two main characters are in separate scenes throughout the film as they do not know each other. When they are in the same scene the happy and positive mood seems to change from when they were separated.

Representation

Our film 'on track' it contains different representations, all of which relate mainly to class and age. our main focus in the film are two young girls who are both aspiring athletes. both of the athletes have different personalities that are shown later through the film but in the opening  both characters are shown as hard working but have different classes, as shown through the types of shots taken and setting of the films. one character, Sophie is wearing old trainers and old muddy cloths. this is to portray sophist character as then that is less fortunate but has still got talent. our location for Sophie is seen as a rough area and quite out back compared to the other characters shots. her training scenes are not using any type of equipment or any fancy sets just the out door environment.

The other main character is a girl who shares the same hobby but with less talent and more training as she may seem to be the "cocky" one she has got well presented trainers and good use of equipment. This girl is dressed as if she is the next olympian as she will be wearing the full kit and will show confidence towards the other girl who is her competition. the reason why we decided to portray the character like this is that it will show emotion towards the other girl and it ill also bring out two sides of the audience depending on what girl they route on as it may be shown as the poor girl loses but has the most passion and bring out the emotion in the film or he wins and the rich girl is nicer by the end. it is up to the audience to take in all of the representations strategies that we have used to get the characters and the film across.

Website for On Track

Here you can see the three different pages to the website that I have created for our film opening. The reason that I created this website was so that our viewers could have something to look at which explained the basics of the film and also a place to watch the opening. It also allows our viewers to be able to contact us if they have any questions about the film.

Film Poster

This is our film poster, this will be used to advertise our film opening. On here is the name of the film (this is the main part of the poster), it then has the names of the two main characters that will be starring in the film, it then has a picture of these actors which gives the audience an idea of what will be going on in the film and then it has the credits at the bottom of the poster. We decided to do a film poster as we believed that it was a quick and also free way to advertise our film to our target audience.

Film Opening Ideas

We decided to create a prezi to present our ideas to our class as we felt that it was the best way to show all of the different ideas for the films that we had.

Peer Assessment for Traffic Lights

What elements of this sequence did you were successful? Give at least two elements, and explain why they were successful.

My favourite part of this film opening is the part where the table is all set up like a proper drug dealer's table. This scene makes the film opening look very real and almost like a professional film.
Also I really liked the music that the group chose because I feel that it really went well with the genre of the film.

Were there any aspects of the sequence which you felt were confusing/distracting/missing, etc? Be sure to explain your answers.

I didn't really understand the scene where they used the go pro headband on the bike, this didn't really make sense to me because it was during a very sunny and bright day which was completely different to the rest of the opening. This scene made the film opening look like it wasn't about drug dealers.

List two things which you feel would have improved this sequence and explain your opinion.

I feel that doing the go pro scene with the headband on the bike in the night time would make the film opening a lot better and it would also make a lot more sense to the audience.

Final film poster ideas

This is our first idea for the film poster for our marketing campaign. This poster has all the information on that people would want/need to know before watching the film. With the credits incorporated with the film poster it shows who was involved within the making of the film. I also inserted a four star rating too show the audience the first 'opinions' of the film. This promotes the film a bit more and shows the target audience that the film is as good as it is made out to be and gives a variety of opinion.

This is our second idea for the film poster. Comparing this one to the poster above it shows the difference of the effect portrayed through the amount of text and no text. With this poster being simplistic it allows the audience to concentrate more on the images which represents what will happen within the film. It also shows focus on the title corresponding with the images. With both of the images involving a track and the title expressing 'on track' it shows how the film involves running on the track. However, the first thought of the title would be that the film is to do with the two girls running on the track, although the moral message behind it is that the two girls hope to be on the right path throughout the whole of their sporting career.

Titles for On Track

As our film is is inspired by the sports film: Fast Girls we decided to look at the titles that this film involved. We decided to note down all of the titles and the order that they were in so that we could take these on board for our film opening. We wanted to use all of the titles in the correct order to show our understanding of how important titles are. We also timed how long each title lasted on the screen for so that we could get ours exactly right.

Title Order:

    Music/VIdeo for On Track

This music will mainly be represented as Sophie or Renae's music that they listen too through their headphones.
We also need music for the opening as the 'theme song' of the film opening.

    Storyboard - On Track

This is our story board for our film opening, we used a voice over to ensure that our viewers know exactly what is going on in each scene. On the storyboard it states the time and place of each shot, this was important to do because it allowed us to be able to know exactly what to do when we were filming. It also states how long each shot should last so that ewe then got the timings exactly correct.

    Shooting Schedule - On Track

    Shooting schedule for film opening:
    1. Usain bolt speech about athletics is played over the top of Renae and Sophie training
    2. Opening shot is a close up shot on an alarm clock showing the time, this will be a close up just to show the time and it has a resemblance throughout the opening. during this shot it will be a close up to a wide shot so the shot will glide back to show the whole room.
    3. There is then a close up shot of a calendar and then from that a closer shot of a certain date of the competition.
    4. Another close up shot of Renae putting on shoes.
    5. Wide shot of Renae shouting to her dad OR shot of Renae putting water in her gym bag

    Risk Assessments for filming

We are filming our film opening in a few different places, so we need to make sure that we rule out any risks that could occur when filming in these places.

One place we are filming is the dome, there is a few risks in the dome. The main risk is the entrance, this is because it is a revolving door. It is very important that people only go through the door one at a time because in the past students have got their limbs shut in the door and this has caused them an injury.
Another place we are filming is the school swimming pool, we need to make sure that we are supervised here as this is a place where many hazards could occur. Even though we can all swim to a good standard, we still have to make sure that a qualified lifeguard is around so that if anything does happen, there is a qualified person around to save the person drowning.

In the dance studio there is a few risks, an example would be falling over and twisting your ankle. To prevent this from happening, we should make sure that the floor is safe to walk or dance on. Another risk in this location could be dropping a weight on your foot, to make sure that this doesn't happen, we should ensure that the weight is a suitable weight for the person carrying it, so that they then don't do themselves any damage when lifting it.

    Marketing Campaign

    Marketing for On Track

Marketing campaign is a key moment in order for our film to get enough views. We wish to have a wide variety of types of campaign that will intrigue our primary audience as well as our secondary audience. These types of campaigns will be more aimed towards the secondary audience as the main audience will be intrigued as soon as they see one type of the marketing campaign. The main type of marketing campaign that we are looking into getting the most viewers from is social media. With social media being statistically proven that it gains most of their viewers, many companies like to pursue with this type of idea to campaign for their film. Through our social media we wish to campaign more types through social media, such as poster campaigns and links to radio adds. Social media types that we are looking into producing for our film is T|witter, Facebook and Instagram. This is enough social media platforms that allows our type of audience to share our information and to promote the film to their friends and family. Further down the line with the making of the film, we have thought about developing a Snapchat account to show fans of the film the progress of our film making.

A different type of campaign that we wish to promote our film with is billboards, posters and the sides of buses. This type of social media enables a wide range of people to see what type of film it is and as there is buses that travel it will be aimed towards more people rather than the primary and secondary audience. Through billboards and posters, this can be a marketing idea to campaign for the actors within the film, if they are familiar actors this will intrigue people to come and watch the film. Also if someone sees an actor that is their favourite they will want to try and see the film as they enjoy watching that certain actor.

Another type of marketing campaign that we desire to use to promote our film would be radio adverts. This is a good type of broadcasting technique because it will get a range of audience intrigued. By using a radio advert to promote our film we could get various different radio adverts to be broadcasted, this means that different types of radios will be intriguing a range of audiences which allows more people to come and watch the film. Within our radio advert we can talk about the themes that our film portrays and slight events that will occur. This will give the audience an idea of what will happen throughout, giving people the chance to decide whether they like the film or not.

    Audience for On Track

    On Track
Our main audience (primary audience) for our film consists of 12-20 year olds which is a wide range of people. It ranges from young teenagers to young adults. The primary audience after the film release may extend a little bit more for people in their 20's to 30's. However, regardless of the audience depending on their age, the main people that will be attracted to the film will be sportsman as a group as they will enjoy watching something that they feel passionate about. Although footballers or cricketers many not like to watch a film about girls doing athletics, it is still along the same topic which enables a wide range of people to be attracted to the film.
The picture above is the type of person that we have in mind that is our target audience. We aim to role in as much variety of an audience as possible.

Moreover, as for the secondary audience, this is the type of people that will be brought along to watch the film without an eager feeling to watch it. For example, someone is really wanting to go to the cinema and watch it, they will ask someone to bring their partner / friend / sibling or parents along, to ensure that they get a chance to watch the film. The secondary audience is the audience that we hope too boost our intake of our money and hope to get most of our profit from. Although there will be more viewers that are our primary audience there will still be a large majority of people that are our secondary audience.

    Production Diary's for Film Opening

    Production Diary 1

    07/11/16
Today was the first day of being introduced to our groups and we was told to begin discussing between the groups to get a slight understanding of each others ideas. Renae, Travis and I were all placed in a group together and we was satisfied with each others thoughts and we helped expand each idea to make sure we could picture it too its fullest potential. We can up with a variety of film opening sequences and a few genres. Some of the genres we thought of was, Mystery (magic), Sport and Comedy. We tried to balance out the positives and negatives of each film opening and decided that realistically, the magic film and sport film would effectively be the best.

    Production Diary 2

    08/11/16
As Sophie was the only one present in her team on this day she followed through with making a presentation with the ideas discussed within the group. Sophie decided to list down all the categories needed to be within the presentation to suggest to the class. We then shared out our responsibilities and got ideas from each other whilst asking about our own categories to complete.

    Production Diary 3

    09/11/16
Within this day, as a group, we discussed our ideas further and came up with more ideas revolving around the content and locations for our film. We came to a result that we are more persuaded by the idea of the sport film as it will be more realistic to film and complete with our school being a sports college. Not only that factor, but also a variety of different shots and locations can be used to make it seem more interesting. We emailed the Olympic stadium office asking if it was possible to use the inside of the Olympic stadium to film the track and to film the stadium seats for a panning shot within the film. If the reply is negative then we thought about just filming a shot outside the Olympic stadium with Renae and Sophie walking towards the building. Another shot we could involve within this location is a panning shot of Renae and Sophie looking out onto the Olympic stadium.

    Production Diary 4

    10/11/16
Throughout this day, we needed to have finished our presentation to show our ideas as a whole to the rest of the class. As we presented our presentation to the class they made notes for feedback which we would then read and take on board to make our presentation the best it can be. We received vocal feedback in help for our title and explained our idea for the film further.

    Production Diary 5

    14/11/16
Today, we started planning our shots and our script. We also had a discussion with our teacher about what actors we need in our film opening. We are planning to have a two different p.e teachers from our school to be coaches for the two running girls in our film. We are thinking of having a more experienced coach for Renae as she is the 'rich' girl, and we are then thinking of having a less experienced coach for Sophie as she is the less fortunate girl. We have also started to plan the outfits that the girls will wear in the different scenes. In the running scenes Renae will have up to date running clothes and trainers, whereas Sophie will have run down and worn out clothes and trainers. This will show to the audience the difference in the two girls.

    Student Film Opening Marking

Today we were asked to watch student's film opening's and mark them on what we feel they did well and also what they didn't do so well.

    Michael

I gave this film opening a level 3. This is because it had good camera angles and the camera shots were all very steady. They chose good music which matched really well with the story and the genre. The titles were very well spaced out. I didn't give it a level 4 as I felt that the storyline was very random.

    A School's Nightmare

I gave this film opening a level 4 because I felt that it had a very good storyline that not many people would have thought of. The filming and camera angles were very good. They also chose good sound which added to the effect of their genre.

    Luna

I gave this film opening a level 3, this is because it had a good and interesting storyline. It also had good music which went well with the genre which was teen rom com. Also, the titles came onto the screen in an interesting way which no one else had done.

    Captive

I gave this film opening a level 4. This is because right from the start of it the audience is intrigued. There is good timing between the titles, and there is also a very good storyline. Even though the genre is thriller, it is a different thriller to which most students would have chosen. They also chose a very good location which made their film opening even better.

    Preliminary Task and Evaluation

    1. Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?

In my group I worked with Pip and Antonio for this task. We decided as a group that we were all going to take part in the acting, the filming and the editing, this was because we felt this would help us to achieve the best that we could with our preliminary task.

    2. How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?

We planned our sequence by making a storyboard for our task, this showed us the exact location of the shots that we needed to get and also the timings of them so we then knew how long each shot had to last for and we also then knew which shot we had to film next.

    3. What theorists did you think you could apply to your task?

    4. What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?

We had to take in consideration where we were allowed to film and where we weren't, for example we had to ask a member of teaching staff if we could film a scene in their office. When shooting we had to make sure that we did it during lesson time so that there was no unnecessary people in the background of the shot. When editing we had to make sure that we put all of our footage in the correct place and we also had to make sure that we saved it into the correct area so that when we came back to edit it again at a different time, it would still be there to continue on from.

    5. How successful was your sequence? Please identify what worked well and with hindsight what would you improve/do differently?

I believe our sequence was quite successful, this is because we managed to get all pf the footage that we had planned to get, we were able to use all of the locations that we wanted to and also we managed to film everything we needed to in the time frame that we were given, therefore we didn't get behind with any of the editing.

6.What did others say about your production?

Others in our media class said that our preliminary task had a very good storyline which matched well with our genre type. They also said that the different music clips that we used were a good choice as they linked together well and they got the audience's attention straight away.

7.What have you learnt from completing this task?

From completing this task I have learnt how to film correctly with and without a tripod, and also how to zoom in and out on the camera to add effect. When editing, I learnt how to add a voice over into the scenes and also how to add only certain parts of songs in, for example: when we only wanted the rapping part of a song we clipped it so it was only that part in the background.

8.How will learning be significant when completing your final film opening?

From what I have learnt from this task I will be able to take these new skills and put them into my final film opening to make it even better than this task. From the skills that I have learnt from this task I will now be able to film with a better quality for my final opening and I will also be able to edit much better.

    Thursday 13 October 2016

    Preliminary Task

Today we began to plan our preliminary film task.
The genre that we got for this task was action.
In the group we have decided to use all of us as actors and we will be the three main actors throughout the film, we thought this was a good idea because we wouldn't have to rely on anybody else, and it also means that we could get our task done quicker.
Because our genre is action, we decided to base our film on a school girl who has a precious necklace from her Grandmother and she thinks this is the only reason it is special, however one of the teachers at the school wants the necklace for another reason. The teacher hires a hit man to get the necklace for her (this is the main part of action in the film) and his way of getting into the school is by pretending to be a delivery man. After waiting for the right time, the hit man took his chance to get the necklace off of the innocent girl, to do this he had to tackle her as the girl seemed to have a few fighting skills that she threw at him, when he got the necklace off of the girl he left her laying on the floor and gave his boss a call to let her know he'd done what she asked, he then ran off with the necklace to give to her.d

    Project Diary

    Day 1:
Today we picked the genre of our film out of a hat and we got Action. We then had to think of an idea of what our film is going to be about and once we'd done this we created our storyboard for our preliminary task. By doing a storyboard it made sure that we were prepared and planned for our filming task.
    Day 2:
On our second day of our preliminary task we began to film. As  a group we decided to do all of our filming around our school's grounds which we believed would make it much easier for us to film and also save us a lot of time. We decided to film our first few shots outside the front of the school and also in the dining area and the toilets. We all had a go at filming on this day because we all had to be in a scene at one point.
    Day 3:
Today was the third day of our prelim task, we still had a few more shots to film and we decided to film these down link corridor and also down a staircase. We had to make sure that we included all of the main type of shots that we needed, for example on this day of filming we managed to film a tracking shot of Pip walking along the lockers in the corridor and the camera was following her.
    Day 4:
Today, Renae was the main camera woman because she didn't need to be in any of the scenes whereas Pip and Ant did. Today we had to re-film one scene a couple of times because at the start we couldn't get the timing right.
    Day 5:
Today was the fourth day of our prelim task and we've managed to get all of our filming done and we only have editing to do. We decided to do our editing as a group as we felt that this would ensure that we all had the same footage and also it meant that we could include all of our editing skills instead of only one person's. However, this also means that we can only do something once we have all agreed on it.
    Day 6:
Today we had more editing to do, and to make our prelim better we have to add music in to make it more suspicious, however we're struggling to all decide on one track that we like. We know that we need something like James Bond to create suspense but we can't seem to find one like this at the moment. For the first scene we have chosen to use the song: Writing on the wall by Sam Smith, we think this goes with the first scene because it is a simple and innocent song which is like the girl in the first scene however it has a hidden message which again is like the girl because her necklace is her hidden message. We then decided on the Avenger's theme tune for the start of the action part in our film as it builds up the suspense for the audience.
    Day 7:
Today we are finishing off our editing for our preliminary task, we have mainly finished all of our editing such as putting our effects and transitions in, and now we just have to decide on a few more music tracks to ad din to fit with our genre and the image that we are trying to show.  We decided against the Sam Smith song as we feel it doesn't mix well with the other songs we have chosen this is because it is a lot softer and therefore doesn't really mix well with our genre. We've decided to use an action instrumental for the middle scenes to make sure that the audience isn't bored when watching the scenes that don't have any dialogue in, it also creates suspense when leading up to the main part in the film.
    Day 8:
Today is our final day of editing our preliminary task, we have used a few different music tracks: we used 'the sound of war' in our opening scene, we used this track because it sounds enticing and gets the audience interested right at the start. For the second shots we used the song 'sucker for pain' this is because there's some rapping in the song which shows his rebellious side. We then used 'suspenseful background music' this was to again create suspense for the audience. The next track that we used was 'avengers', we used this track because it relates to our genre of action. The last tack that we used was the 'suspenseful background music' again, this was to show that the hit man has got away with his actions. We have also added in a phone ringing audio to make sure that the audience understand exactly what is going on. We also added a voice over in to help the audience to know what is going on.

    Dncing Animals Practice Edit

This was my first project on premiere. On this project we had to choose a song that we thought went best with the clips. I chose this song because I feel that it was really upbeat and lively like the dancers. I also had to choose where to put the clips in to make sure that it mixed well with the music. I had to ensure that there was no blank screens in between the clips so I had to make sure that we cut the clips at the correct time and that I merged them together correctly.
From doing this project I learnt how to use the software and I know feel I am more experienced and prepared for future projects.

    Independent vs Mainstream Film

Fast and Furious 7 vs The Riot Club

Image result for fast and furious 7
Image result for the riot club
    1. Fast and Furious 7 was distributed by universal. The film has many production companies, these include: Original Film, One Race Film, Media Rights Capital, China Film, Relativity Media- usually a film company will use different company’s to help produce the film because they all specialise in different things.
The Riot Club was also distributed by universal. However, unlike the mainstream film , this film only had one production company and that is Blueprint Pictures.
    2. The budget of Fast and Furious 7 was 190 million dollars. The budget of The Riot Club is unknown, this could be because the film actually lost money so they therefore don't want to publish their budget.
    3. Fast and Furious 7 made 353 million dollars, which is a very big profit and it's clear to us that the film was a massive success.
The Riot Club made 3.5 million dollars, as we don't know their budget we can't tell if they made a profit from this production or if they actually lost money. But, we can see that they made almost 350 million dollars less than the mainstream film made. This clearly shows the difference (in money) between an independent film and a mainstream film.
    4. The production companies for fast and furious are very well known and they have produced many other famous mainstream films. As well as the production companies of this film, the distribution company (Universal) is also a worldwide, well known company.
The production company of the independent film The Riot Club isn't very well known, this could be why this film is an independent film because it doesn't have a well known production company which could be why it's not a well known film like the mainstream film- Fast and Furious 7.

    5. The mainstream film that I have chosen has 5 different production companies unlike the independent film I have chosen which only has one production company. Another difference between the two films are that the mainstream film made a huge profit from the production of the film, but the independent film didn't.

    6. The two films that I have chosen were both distributed by the well known, worldwide company: Universal.

    7. The production company 'Original Film' also made the series of prison break as well as Fast and Furious 7 and many other famous films, the series of prison break was a very successful series the same as all of the Fast and Furious films have been. This shows that this production company is very successful in producing good films that the public love.
The production company 'Blueprint pictures' which is the production company for the film The Riot Club, also produced a film called 'The Outcast' this isn't a very well known film either, the same as the independent film I have chosen.

    8. The main genre of film that the production company 'Original Film' produces seems to be action. We all know that all of the Fast and Furious films share the same genre of action, and also the famous series: Prison Break also has a genre of action.
The main genre type for the film production company 'Blueprint Pictures' seems to be varied.
Considering the genre type that a production company specialises in is important when making a film because you want  to choose a production company which is interested in the genre of your film and also that is going to make your film the best that it can be.

    9. Universal is the distribution company for both of the films I have chosen to talk about, and as these two films are very different from each other, it is clear to see that this institution appeals to a variety of different audiences.

    10. I feel that the production companies for the mainstream film that I have chosen outperform the one production company for the independent film that I have chosen. This is because the mainstream film was more successful in every way and also, the mainstream film had 5 production companies which made it more famous whereas the independent film only had one which could be why it wasn't as popular.

    Juno Filming and Editing Task

    Props
    • Juice Carton
    • Red Hoodie
    • Tripod
    • Camera
    Location

Outside and around the grounds of Great Baddow High School.

    Evaluation Questions

Overall, the filming for our Juno project went really well, we managed to get all of the shots that we needed and we also got the timings of each shot correct. In some shots, like the tree shot for example- the tree in our video lasts longer on the screen than it does in the original Juno video, we should try to improve our filming accuracy for next time.
I believe that my storyboard was accurate as we followed it throughout the whole of the filming and without it we wouldn't have been able to get any shots finished. Our storyboard had the timings on each part which really helped us when trying to get the timing correct for each shot.
In our group we were all very good at finding the correct locations to film and we was all very quick at getting the shots done therefore we didn't waste any time, this was one of our strengths. Another one of our strengths was getting the correct props prepared for the video, we managed to get a red hoodie which was exactly like the original Juno video and we also managed to get a juice carton which wasn't exactly the same as the original video but it was very similar which made our video better. With using the tripod, we could get a steady shot without having any shakiness which made the quality of our video much better. Without the correct props we wouldn't have been able to get the footage accurate.
One of our weaknesses was that in some shots we didn't make them last for the correct amount of time so when editing we had to stretch them out slightly which allowed us to make them the correct amount of time. Another one of our weaknesses was matching the setting to the video, for example we had to take some time to wait for a car to drive past to get the footage correct. Also, in some shots we didn't manage to match the timing correctly to the original Juno video which made our editing job a lot harder to do because we had to try and stretch some shots out so make them slower to try and make both the videos match at the best that we could.
We successfully managed to get all of the footage that we needed for our project, this then made it much easier for us to be able to upload our footage onto premiere, and then all we had to do was edit it, to make it match the original Juno.
With premiere I learnt how to add the 'find edges' effect onto my footage which I found was the best effect that matched the original Juno video effect. I also learnt how to blend it to a certain percentage so that it wasn't too black and white and so that the colour matched the original Juno video colours. Also with premiere, I learnt how to add in another video onto the footage that I have already imported, I had to add in the original Juno video into the corner of my Juno video so that it is easy to compare them both, this was tricky at first to get them both to play at the same time but once I managed to do it, it made my work look a lot better.
With the camera I learnt how to do a panning shot and I also learnt how to zoom in and out to get the effect that I wanted.
I think that most of the filming went well because we managed to get all of the footage we needed. I also think that my editing on premiere went well because I was able to add in the correct transitions and also add in the correct effects to try to match the original video as best as I could.
From doing this project I learnt many new skills on premiere such as how to add different effects in a and also how to make a shot last for longer, this was a very helpful skill to have as on one of my shots it didn't last for the same amount of time that the original Juno video lasted for, so then i had to try to make it last longer so that it matched the original video correctly.
For my next production, I will aim to make sure that every shot is done to the best that it can be and I will also make sure that it lasts for the correct amount of time that it is supposed to. I will also make sure that there is no unnecessary distractions in the background, for example in my first shot of my Juno video there is a member of the public going into his house in the background, and although this wasn't really a problem for us as a group, it still wasn't in the original Juno video so it therefore shouldn't be in my Juno video.

Juno Filming and Editing Task Storyboards

This is my storyboard for my Juno filming and editing task. As you can see there is 17 shots that I have drawn, having an image of these shots allowed us as a group to be able to film our Juno video as accurately as we could. Also included in each shot is the timings, this really helped us as a group to be able to know how long each shot needed to last for in order to make it match the original Juno video. Underneath each shot I wrote a description of what was happening in the shot, this was important to do in case one of my group members couldn't understand what the drawing was, which would then mean they could read the description and we could get on with the shot, doing this also saved a lot of time.

    Institution- Logo, Big/Small budget

What is the main film going audience?

The main film going audience is teenagers to 35 year olds. This is because teenagers like to have something to do at the weekends or after school with there friends so the cinema is a good way to socialise and enjoy their time withe their friends. This is also the same for people from the age of 20-35 who may not see their friends as often as school children do, cinema is a great way to be able to share their interests.

How do cinemas make most of their money?

Cinemas make the most of their money in three ways. One of the main ways is through selling tickets for the people to be able to watch the film. The ticket prices are usually quite expensive but of course people pay it because they want to watch the film. Another way the cinema makes money is by selling snacks, if the cinema stopped selling snacks then the wouldn't be in business. For a £5 popcorn it only costs them roughly around 50p. A £3 coke costs the cinema only 10p to make. Think how much profit they get from the amount of people that buy these snacks.
The third way that they make the most of their money is through on screen advertisements. Cinemas get paid to show new films trailers before the film that is about to be shown starts, this is why there is usually between twenty to thirty minutes of these trailers before the film starts because the more the cinema show, the more money they will make and of course they want to make the most that they possibly can.

How do you get a film into the cinema?

To get a film into the cinema it can be very hard, especially for an independent film industry. A common option chosen by film producers is entering the huge international film festival such as Toronto for example. They would then need to be selected for these A list international festivals which would then give the film a huge opportunity of being seen. If their film is chosen by one of the festivals then it will be seen by the worlds distributors and then if your film is up to their standards then they will bid against each other to gain the rights to have your film shown in their country. Unfortunately some are never noticed and won't get bidded on.

    What does a distributor do?

A film distributor is in charge of the marketing for the film. Distribution deals play a big part in the financial side of a film. The distributor may set the release date of the film and also how the film will be shown, for example they will decide whether the film is shown to the public through the cinemaor whether it is just for home viewing (DVD).

    Film Pitch Feedback

This is our film pitch for our film 'The Last Adventure'.

The feedback we received from one of our peers on this presentation was that is was a very relevant narrative for the genre and that it was very interesting, she rated us 9/10 for this.
Our teacher said that our main character Stacey should maybe be a bit younger, we agreed with this and have decided to change her age from 18 to 16. We were told that the rest of our characters are well casted. We were rated 8/10 for this. One of our peers however said that all of the characters personalities fit well together.
We were told that our enigma code was really good, the audience wants to know what her special wish is, we were rated 9/10 for this.
Our teacher said that our narrative was very suitable for our target audience and that we created escapism. We were told that the quote on the film poster will help attract the audience. She rated us 9/10 for this part of the presentation.
Our teacher said that our narrative was lovely and that with the stay at home target audience it is easier to manipulate their emotions. We were rated  9/10 for this as well.
Our teacher said that our film is different with a teen twist and for this we received 8/10.
Our peer said that our marketing ideas were extremely well thought out and she marked us 8/10 for this.
Overall we received 60 out of 70, we as a group were very happy with this result but we have thought out ways to improve on our film.

    Film Language Analysis

    Boyz N the Hood

Image result for boyz n the hoodIn the opening of this film we get a big insight to what the whole film is going to be based on. For the first 1 minute and 8 seconds of the film we don't see anything other than the title of the film and the producers names, we only hear things. We hear lots of swearing and trash talk which suggests to the audience that gangs could be involved in the film. We also hear the police being called about one of their own officers being shot which shows that the police don't really have any power or control over the violence that is happening, we also hear many gun shots being fired which tells the audience that there is going to be a lot of violence within the film. We also hear a young boy crying and saying: 'they shot my brother' this shows that young children are caught up in all of this violence.

The first few settings we see are: in the streets when the children are on the way to school this is an interesting setting because we see the young children walking past the shooting area as if it is just the usual everyday thing for them, which is shocking for the audience. We also see the South Central LA school where the children attend, this is another shocking setting for the viewers because we notice that in the classroom instead of having pictures of the children's families or of happy things, they have pictures of violent scenes which is very unusual and unsettling. We also see the area when they are on the walk home from school, here we see that the children are constantly surrounded by violence, we know this because we watch one of the boys walk past a group of older men having a fight.

One of the themes in this film is violence, before even seeing any clip in the film the audience knows straight away because of the sounds right at the start of the film. Another theme is Black Americans, we get to see as an audience what it is like to live in the area they live in and how they deal with things.

The characters that we see in the start of the film are the children, the teacher and one of the boys mother's. It is clear to the audience that the boy who gets into trouble is the main character in the group of kids, he leads them on the way to school and seems to be very cocky for example when he gets up and starts teaching the class. The teacher comes across as very patronising we see this side of her when she calls up the boys mother and is surprised when the mother tells her that she is employed.

In the first minute of the film we only hear off screen sounds this is when we can hear the sound but we can't see where it is coming from, we hear lots of swearing in the men's conversation- this makes the audience feel quite cautious of what's going on because we can't see the characters that are talking, cars, shootings, police which all suggests to the audience that the film is going to contain a lot of violence. We hear screams and police sirens which suggests that people are getting hurt and are living in fear. The police sirens and the car screeching on the road are non diegetic sounds which have been added on to the film. Diegetic sounds are real sounds such as the young boy talking. We also hear a young boy crying about this violence which shows that there is still some innocence in the film, when listening to this the audience feels great sympathy for the young boy. There is parallel sound when the boy is walking through the street and the teacher is on the phone to his mother.

The camera changes from setting to setting very quickly and sharply which could represent how quick a gun fires. The camera pans across the whole classroom this could be to portray the different personalities of the children in the classroom. There is many close up shots which only really occur when the character is showing an emotion, this could be so that the audience feels closer to the character and can begin to understand their story. The camera doesn't really move very much in the opening scene, it is mainly focused on panning. This could show the focus of violence on the characters.

The main characters costumes are casual clothes which shows that they don't have to make an effort to look smart fir school which shows the level of the education they are receiving. Throughout the opening of the film the lighting is quite dull and it is almost like there is something covering the screen of the camera which could represent how the gangs cover up their shootings. The actors in the film seem to be of low class we know this because of the area they live in, the teacher seems to be of middle class due to the clothes she was wearing and her job.

The young boy who gets into trouble with the teacher seems to get the most screen time in the opening scene, followed by the boy who he had a fight with in the class. This could be because these two are the main characters in the film. The pace of the film opening is quite slow this could be a build up to the main part of the film.

To analyse the opening scene of this film we had to focus on: the colour, the binary oppositions, male and female and also the good vs. the evil.
The main colour in this opening scene is black, this could be to portray to the audience that something bad could happen because black represents darkness and mystery. The colour black could also show that the characters are trying to hide something. However, at the start of the opening scene we see a harsh white light which we later find out to be the policeman's torch, this could be to show that the police are trying to find something about the characters and they are putting them on the spot.
The binary oppositions in this clip could be the men vs. the women, in this opening scene we see that the woman has a lot of power, even though she is the only woman against all of the men in the clip. Women are usually shown as weak and not as strong as men but in this clip we see that the woman is actually as good if not better than the men which is opposite to what the audience usually expects to see.
The good vs. the evil in this clip could be the group of the men and the woman vs. the police force. Clearly the police force are trying to catch the group for doing something bad but they seem to get away.

When analysing this scene from the film UP we had to consider how they showed the passage of time, the sound, the mise en scene and the camera.
They showed the passing of time in a really clever and interesting way, this was by the changing of the man's ties. Everyday his wife Ellie does his tie for him before work and we see how the style of tie changes over time and then when we see the couples facial features after the tie scene is over, we realize that they have grown old.
The sound in this clip is a very catchy and happy song which portrays to the audience that the couple are very happy together. However, when the woman becomes sad the music becomes very slow and makes the audience feel the same emotion as the character.
The characters costumes are very similar throughout the clip, the man always seems to be in suits and the woman seems to vary from jeans and a top to dresses, this shows that they are a typical middle class couple. The lighting in this scene is changed quite frequently throughout, for example when they are having fun and enjoying themselves it is very bright and colourful but for example when the lady is sitting in the garden on her own and the man is looking at her it is quite dark and dull and this is to show the characters mood. There is only two main characters in this clip which makes it easier for their story to be shown. The main prop in this opening scene is the house because this is where most of the clip is filmed and where the couple spend most of their fun times. Another main prop could be the hospital because this is where the couple spend their saddest times together.
The camera doesn't have too many shot changes in this scene, the main shot is at eye level for both characters which could show that they are both equal. When the couple are looking up at the sky to the clouds this is a point of view shot which allows the audience to be able to relate to the characters.

To analyse this film opening we had to focus on the camera and the mise en scene.
The camera in the first part of this clip is zoomed in onto some photos which clearly have some meaning to the main character Cady. The camera then zooms out and we see the back of Cady. We then see a slight pan shot of a small section of the inside of the prison where all of the prisoners are watching Cady leave. We then see a transition of the door that Cady leaves the prison from shutting behind him and the camera goes straight to the prison gates opening for him to leave. This is a good transition because it shows the character's departure well.
The costumes of the characters in this clip are their prison uniforms and the police officers uniform, when Cady is released from the prison he is wearing his own clothes which shows his seperation from the prison life to his new life outside the prison. The lighting in this clip is quite dull when in the prison but then when the character is leaving the prison the lighting is very bright which again shows the difference between prison life and his life outside the prison. The main character we see in this clip seems to be around 40/50, and seems to be of low class as he is in prison. The pictures in Cady's cell are a prop because they were of violent people which could show to the audience what he is actually like. His tattoos could also be seen as a prop because he had a nazi sign tattoo which again show what he is like as a person. The setting of this clip is in a prison which gives the audience an insight to what the film is all about.
